Following the great success of the 45 Best Freeware Design Programs and attending requests of more open source apps, here is a new extensive list of Open Source Graphic Programs that you may take into consideration for production use. There is a lot of technicalities when we talk about The Open Source movement, and we are not covering them here in detail, so please forgive me if I am not being formal enough with all the terminology.
You will find the name of the project, a lovely screenshot (who doesn’t love screenshots?), the Development Status (I’ve included from Beta to mature ones) and the supported platforms. Please notice that some of the projects may have restricted license use; before using a particular software, check first if the intended use is allowed. Most of this list allows commercial use, but that may or may not change in the future, so check first with the site before using it.
As I said before, maybe they won’t replace your commercial apps, but some of them are worth keeping and eye on since they are in constant evolution. Which is the great thing about open source: due to their nature, everyone can contribute to its growth.
I know I know we are designers and most of us don’t do code (have met only a few who code and design beautifully blessed ones) but many of us have great can’t-chose-even-the-right-font coders friends that might be interested

Where is Gimp, Inkcape, Bryce and many others?
They are in the previous post 45 Best Freeware Design Programs. So at the end we got 45+40 = 85 Free Design Programs isn’t that great ? 🙂
Don’t download any programs to edit your images
Edit your images online check 15 Free Online Image Editors.
I’m looking for a simple way to model my bedroom and furniture, and try new ways to design the interior, and try new colors on the walls / curtains. What do you recommend? Thanks for the list!
Quite a collection. Thanks.
So, you’re not fond of The Gimp or Inkscape?
QCAD = not open source but commercial production software with a crippling demo implementation… 10 minutes run time and it ‘shuts down’ like a crash and if you reopen the program it will repeat this until you have used 100 hours (in 10 minute intervals)… THE WORST DEMO IDEA I HAVE EVER SEEN.
Another open source program you may find useful is ZScreen. It is a C# program.
http://www.brandonz.net/projects/zscreen
It allows you to take region/window/full-screen screenshots, upload them via FTP, and put the URL in your clipboard in one keystroke.
OK, you try to make the 40 best open source graphics program list for everyone and you don’t include either gimp, xara lx, or inkscape? not complete. but there are some good things here i didnt previously know about
Where is Gimp…it is only a very fine replacement for Photoshop.
@Brandon
@Don
@jiml
Guys This list is a continuation from https://www.snap2objects.com/2007/07/20/45-best-freeware-design-programs/
In that list is Gimp, inkscape, paint, etc all I tried to cover the programs I dint Cover on the first post.
So indeed you got 40+45= 85 Free Design Programs 🙂
Where is Blender?
Guys, listen. I was asked similar questions in an interview – where I got the job (not Google this one.)
What I’ve realized is that the questions serve to amuse the interviewers and to observe how the candidate handles strange questions.
Some of them may very well be answered, but most of them are quite hard and indefinable and thus doesn’t really serve the purpose to be solved correctly.
@Alden, blender is on the other page.
btw, nice list.
QCad
Website says: “download & try or purchase”
How it is included as “FREE” program.
How many more are as FREE as QCad?
Nice tools….
Cool list. I would add gimp.
QCAD has a Free Open Source Community Edition .
Go Download it free 😉 .
Thanks
nice one!
and this: http://rufino-city.myminicity.com/
One more to add to the collection.
Qtpfsgui

Um…guyz, GIMP is on da other page, itz like 3rd or 4th or sumfin.
Kool pg.
Thanks Loads
Kool idea of da challenge fing ;D
New for me most of the collection.Nice collection especially because I didn’t expect 3D modeling softwares to be Free and good except for Blender, Google Sketcup [ which has a paid version ].
My blog:
http://bethefriend.blogspot.com
You can’t really expect 3D graphics software growing on Windows that fast as compared to Linux that’s for sure.
Expecting a lot more exciting softwares from Linux Developers and Community.
http://www.artofillusion.org is a java based 3D modeler/animator program. Better than Blender I think.
The ” Best” in my view is : Irfanview for images & more … but not shown in your list.
Hi I’ve been wanting to try some o[en source graphic programs but never knew what program to use. The sharp construct one looks cool. Thanks for the informative post.
Thanks! This is a really great resource. I am looking for an open source graphics program that will let me make a game board to use in my class. I am hoping it will be pretty simple to use – I will need to become pretty proficient at it so that I can use it often. I have 2 kinds of designs in mind. One is a game board like Monopoly – square and structured. The other is more free flowing with lots of curves, like Candyland. I need the final product to be tabloid size – about 2x A3. Can someone recommend software that will do this?
@Tom What you need is Vector editor program the best open source option is http://www.inkscape.org
Could you please recommend a program similar to MS Publisher, preferably freeware, that will handle Corel’s cmx files etc
I use Publisher for some pretty basic, hobby only work
I have a heap of Corel clipart that I can’t use because it will not export without changing the transparent background to a white background, making it unusable and very frustrating to say the least
thnaks a lot
great site by the way
@Nev the closet open source alternative to MS Publisher is Open Office Draw and use the multiple templates they have available at http://templates.services.openoffice.org if you want something more advance I would recomend Inkscape. To handle your cmx files try http://www.xnview.com is free programs that allows you to import cms and export them to another format.

thanks for your help Mao32
now have open office installed and running

Thanks for share, nice information.
anyone suggest me for basic 3D skill.
hi
i’m looking for a collection of ‘web 2.0’ graphics (good light effects) so i can quickly put together reasonable looking logos and mini sites so i can test launch sites quicker.
Also i’m looking for an easy graphic editor. Right now i still use (don’t laugh or faint) microsoft photodraw from like 10 years ago. :))) seriously.
Photoshop always drives me nuts. is there a quick way to learn it? any courses ? please email me if you have anything good. i don’t even care if it is you affiliate link
thanks
Tony
@Options Trading For a nice collection of web 2.0 stuff you can go here is nice round up from smashing mag
http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2007/03/10/web-20-tutorials-round-up/
For a graphic editor, I don´t know how advance you need your editor. But I would recommend paint.net at getpaint.net for your basic need is a free software and it is very useful now if you are looking something easier maybe with wizard you should look for for picasa 3 at picasa.google.com another wonderful free software wicht cover all your basic need with easy to follow wizards.
Now to learn photoshop I have an amazing resource at tutorial9 they have a free course online, I total recomend it and it comes from basic to more advance so you go to own pace.
tutorial9.net/school-of-photoshop/ well I hope I have been helpful.
I feel lucky can read this useful news. Now I find something what i want to know.
Thank you for this great information.

This is actually really interesting regarding your fact article here
I will give Scribus a go. Thanks for the thorough review.
marvellous!….
This list rocks!! The other list, 45 Best Freeware Design Programs doesn’t include the OS compatible information; otherwise that list rocks also, just a few rocks less. 🙂
Thankyouverymuch!!
I have to admit that I have been searching for this information for a long time. Reading this wonderful entry I have known many new things about the open source graphic programs, which I have not known before. As I see all your articles are informative and full of valuable information so I will definitely bookmark your website and wait for more such great posts like this one. So huge thanks for publishing this article here, without you I would never known about such a thing ever.
this is an amazing list of software. I’m going to suggest QCad to my husband, he been looking for one like forever.
Hi
I am looking for open source shape file editor like Kosmo & Q gis
gimp rocks
I’m looking for an open source alternative to CorelDraw X4. I primarily use it for ad design, but also occassionally to put graphics together for my web site. I have an old version of PageMaker, but it can’t handle a lot of what the publications I work with require and I can’t afford InDesign or Quark. I’m hoping there’s something out there that’s not only similar to X4, but perhaps more importantly, can open and utilize X4 files without loss of content. I noticed that Inkscape can convert my older CDR files, but I didn’t see CDX mentioned, and if the UniConverter doesn’t work, then the alternative steps will lose the bitmaps. Jumping through all those hoops doesn’t look like a lot of fun either…
Any suggestions??
Thanks
Great list – thanks!
thanks very much
Nice Share…………..
nice share! thank you for great post.

Link for LinPHA is broken – project still on sourceforge though
Good list, but what about Inkscape? It’s pretty much the open source alternative to AI/Corel Draw…
Really useful collection! And very cheap too! 🙂
